Somalia today condemned Israel’s “flagrant assault” on its country’s unity and territorial integrity through recognition of “Somaliland”, as multiple Security Council members and regional States warned the move was a provocative step that could inflame tensions in the Horn of Africa and undercut Mogadishu’s sovereignty and political cohesion.

Iran has provided “no information” to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the status of its enriched uranium stockpiles, a top UN official told the Security Council today, as members split over the “snapback” mechanism and many urged parties to return to negotiations to pursue a diplomatic solution.

The Security Council today extended for one year the mandate of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and tasked the Mission to support the implementation of the country’s permanent ceasefire with Rwanda.  The renewal comes amid ongoing tensions in the country’s eastern provinces, where the 23 March Movement (M23) armed group, with reported support from Rwandan forces, has continued its offensive.
